Why you should see a podiatrist first for heel pain
Heel pain is common in adults, with most people likely to have some form of heel pain at least once in their lifetime. The treatment is very successful, as long as the right combination of therapies is used. Much people choose to be treated first by their primary care physician instead of going directly to a foot specialist physician. This article will discuss the benefits of looking for a podiatrist primarily for the care of this condition, and the obstacles to reach a specialist up for the initial treatment.
Heel pain is almost always related to an injury to a ligament called the plantar fascia. This thick band rubbery tissue begins at the heel and runs to the ball of the foot in the ark, and it is separated into three bands. A wide variety of situations can cause injury to the fascia, but by far the most common cause is chronic tissue damage due to abnormal foot structure. Most people with this condition have flexible flat feet or flattening and stretching of the fascia strain with every step. Over time and with good conditions, the attachment of the fascia or near the heel bone can become inflamed and thickened, with microscopic tears to get out of bed and a sitting or standing or moving, after a long period of time. The infamous heel spur is related to this strain. Although heel spurs are rarely source of pain (despite the common myth that they cause heel pain), they are sympathetic in response to pressure on the outer layer of the bone bead attached to the fascia.
High arches and plantar fasciitis heel pain due to poor shock absorption the foot of a lack of capacity of the flattening. The fascia becomes inflamed as a result of the shock constant. High arched feet are less common than feet flat, and if this cause is less common. People with "normal" arches can still develop a force of plantar fasciitis injury. This can occur when ladders or stairs are used in excess, when you walk on a blunt object, or during sports activities such as sports racing.
There are a number of other less common causes of heel pain are not associated with plantar fasciawdsc. These include nerve pain from a pinched nerve in the ankle or lower back stress fractures of the heel bone, rare bone tumors, the pain of the body of the scale arthritic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, nerve damage from conditions such as diabetes, and a simple heel bruises.
The reasons for which a podiatrist is the best doctor to treat heel pain essentially is the nature of what causes most cases of heel pain. Since the majority of heel pain is due to the structure of the foot, a deep understanding of the structural mechanics of the foot and how to change it is necessary to that treatment is effective and sustainable. In other words, if a physician does not change the structure of the foot by supporting a flat foot or by providing shock absorption to a high arched foot, the condition will simply continue to develop gradually, even after a temporary relief granted by medical treatment. Many (if not most cases) of plantar fasciitis can be improved with anti-inflammatories, stretching, icing, and steroid injections. These measures will often reduce pain by reducing inflammation of tissues. However, unless the structure of the arch is controlled fasciitis foot will simply return in the near future as the underlying cause is not addressed. Primary care physicians are able to start their patients' medications prescription and stretching, and some may give an injection. Many are also able to recommend a store-bought insertion (many are insufficient to significantly help plantar fasciitis). Unfortunately, primary care physicians most have little or no training on foot biomechanics, and can not properly assess its full structure of the foot. It's something Podiatrists specialize in. The use of better quality temporary pre-made inserts and the long-term use of custom made functionally correct prescription inserts are part of the treatment of a podiatrist and expertise.
Another reason podiatrists are better suited to a first treatment of heel pain is that they treat this disease more than once by day, week after week. This experience allows two advantages podiatrist. One is that podiatrists can help identify if multiple causes are in place the creation of heel pain (plantar fasciitis and to such an inflammation of the nerves), and if heel pain is caused by less common causes. This leads to a faster diagnosis, more accurate and effective initial treatment. The second advantage is that a podiatrist they are able, through experience, to determine the course the most effective treatment. Plantar fasciitis responds not only to one or two treatments, but multiple treatments at the same time. This includes a mixture of reducing inflammation, mobilization of the fascia extends through the right and eventually Stretching a splint worn at night, and structural support. In each of these treatments, changes may need to be made based on the individual foot. Also, the time of treatment must be specific. For example, a single injection of steroid compound in the heel periodical is rarely effective, but multiple injections (up to three) separate works by two weeks in most cases. A podiatrist can also recognize the failure treatment relatively quickly and move on to other treatments, including physiotherapy, immobilization of the foot, or surgery (which is done on only a small percentage of patients with heel pain)
Seeing a podiatrist first, there may be a more accurate diagnosis given At the initial visit, and more effective treatment can be performed leading to resolution of long-lasting heel pain. Unfortunately, there are some obstacles to obtaining the first care. Some insurance plans, especially managed care, require a referral by the primary care physician to see a specialist. Many family physicians will need to evaluate their first patient in order to make the referral, as difficult to make the referral to a specialist right just based on a phone call. This will lead to a delay in processing. Some doctors primary care at this point may prefer to first try of their own treatment, or may refer to the orthopedic surgeon general local care. While some orthopedic surgeons are specially trained in foot and ankle, many have limited experience in the treatment of a foot injury, non-traumatic and have little training in biomechanics of the foot. Another obstacle to foot care occurs if you live in a rural area lack of specialists, force him to travel long distances to see a doctor of podiatric.
Heel pain is common, can be chronic if not properly treated, and generally has the care of a foot specialist for him to be gone for good. In Seeing a podiatrist first when heel pain is growing, we can avoid a delay, to receive specific care and save money receiving specific treatments and specialist to ensure the condition does not return.
